Julie was born in rural Somerset, England. After working as a freelance designer in London in the late 1980s she went for an extended holiday to Sydney and decided to stay. In partnership with a friend from art college, she formed the design consultancy Printhouse Furnishings. Recognising the need for a locally produced fabric company, she established ‘cloth’ in 1997. By 2000 Julie had sole ownership of ‘cloth’ and began painting. Her travels around Australia’s hinterland-scapes form the starting point for her design process and are at the heart of her business. Julie has also produced rugs, furniture and jewellery. She has worked on several boutique hotel commissions and supplied fabrics for Australian films including Baz Lurhmann’s forthcoming ‘Australia’. She also sells her fabric around the world.
